What is the difference between smb and ftp

Using samba server we can upload,download and view a files. In samba server we have a printer sharing, but where as in ftp we don't have such option.

In samba we need to authentication like we give a username and password. Practically ftp server is fast downloading and uploading where as samba is comparetively less.
