All-in-one tripods like this are inexpensive and great for beginners. I remember the first time I walked into a camera store to look at a some tripod heads and was shocked to find that the sticker price was well beyond what I thought was reasonable.
Over the years I came to realize that the reason these components are so expensive was because they are made of much higher-grade materials and built to specifications that demanding photographers need. Hopefully it will give you a better idea of what to look for the next time you walk down to your local camera shop, or browse through some of your favorite online photo stores.
Manfrotto CR2 ball head. Ball heads are designed around a degree swivel basically a large ball bearing, hence the name, ball head which you can tighten or loosen with a lever or dial on the side.
You can turn your camera from side to side, rotate it in a circle, or change its orientation from portrait to landscape in an instant, all with virtually no effort on your part. Some are specifically designed to let you change just one direction of motion at a time, which is useful if you are into special types of shots like panning. The first time you use one it can be a bit disorienting until you get used to the sheer amount of freedom they offer.
But be careful to keep one hand on your camera while you adjust the locking mechanism on the ball head. This degree of freedom can actually be a bad thing if you only want to adjust one parameter at a time, and it can be tricky to operate ball heads when you want micro-level adjustments. If you have set it up right then it should be easy to stitch together the results into a seamless panorama. A geared tripod head is a really precision piece of engineering designed for studio work , but also sometimes used outdoors for landscape or architectural photography.
Why use one? The reason is the very precise control they allow. Perfect alignment of the camera and exact composition can be achieved much more easily with a geared head, like the new Manfrotto XPRO Geard head.
There is some crossover in the capabilities of many tripod heads. Depending on the type or types of photography you do , it will affect your choices. For me the XPro ball head is a great general-purpose choice, but I also use other types as and when needed. If you team up the right tripod head with some suitable legs , it will be a pleasure to use and produce great results for many years to come.

The Gitzo 3 Way Fluid Head is a relatively recent addition to my kit but having used it extensively over the last twelve months I have come to depend on its reliability and versatility among different types of tripod heads.
Professional Ball Heads for tripods offers more freedom of movement and greater flexibility — releasing one control allows the head to be moved in all directions. This is ideal when the photographer needs to change the cameras position frequently, quickly or on several planes at the same time.
Ball heads also tend to be more compact than their 3 Way equivalents. Better quality ball heads offer additional knobs for panoramic movements and to adjust the friction of the main controls to provide more precision.
Gitzo is a mechanism that wraps and fixes the ball from below against hard iron metal. Minimizing the movement of the ball even when locked, it is possible to prevent deviation of the angle of view and keeping precise framing for tele lens. It is compact and light weighing just grams but has a 14kg load capacity, so will easily hold my mirrorless cameras and lenses.
It has independent panoramic and friction controls plus a built-in bubble level to ensure my horizons stay level.
